Symptoms of IBS not only affect our health but also compromise our quality of life. Some may also reach a point of depression. Studies indicated as many as 1 in 5 American adults has signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
There are mainly 2 types of irritable bowel syndrome, one of which triggers stronger than normal contractions, causing gas, bloating and diarrhoea. The other may have weak intestinal contractions which slow food passage, leading to hard, dry stools.
The exact causes of IBS is still not known but a variety of factors are attributed to it. An imbalanced gut flora dominated by harmful bacteria can result in a build-up of toxins and intestinal wastes that weakens the intestines and prevent them from functioning normally.
